What it covers

ISO/IEC 14763-2 sets requirements for the planning, installation and operation of telecommunications cabling. It covers the cabling itself, pathways, spaces and telecommunications bonds. Bonding networks are dealt with in ISO/IEC 30129.

It supports cabling designed to the ISO/IEC 11801 series. The standard lists eleven aspects:

  • Specification of the installation
  • Quality assurance
  • Installation planning
  • Installation practice
  • Documentation
  • Administration
  • Testing
  • Inspection
  • Operation
  • Maintenance
  • Repair

It also gives a method for assessing spaces, pathways and cabling, installed or planned, for remote powering such as PoE.

Safety and EMC requirements are outside its scope. Wireless and other free-space transmission is excluded. Power supply cabling is not specified, but its effect on telecommunications cabling is taken into account.

Structure

Clauses 5 to 14 apply to any type of premises. Normative Annexes C to G add or change requirements for specific premises types.

8Installation practices: pathway systems, cable installation, jointing and termination, acceptance
9Documentation and administration: identifiers, labelling, records, reports
10Testing of balanced and optical fibre cabling
11Inspection, at Levels 1, 2 and 3

Annex HEquipment accommodation environments (informative)
Annex IInformation for remote powering

Key technical content

Quality planning and testing

Clause 6 requires a quality plan. It sets out sampling for balanced and optical fibre cabling, including minimum sample sizes for alien crosstalk testing. It also says how marginal and non-compliant results are handled.

Clause 10 covers links, permanent links and channels, cabling interface adapters, calibration and measurement conditions. Balanced cabling is tested to IEC 61935-1. Optical fibre cabling is tested to ISO/IEC 14763-3. Both are normative references.

Segregation from power

Clause 7.9 covers separation of telecommunications and power supply cabling inside buildings. It uses a classification of telecommunications cables, a minimum separation (S) and a power cabling factor (P). Clauses 7.10 and 7.11 cover segregation from power for underground and aerial cabling outside buildings.

Remote powering

Clause 5.3.4 sets remote powering installation categories and their controls (Table 1). Clause 7.14 covers planning and assessment for remote powering, including temperature rise in cable bundles and its effect on channel length. Labels can show the remote powering category of an installation.

Pathways and spaces

Clause 7.6 covers pathway systems inside and outside buildings, including bend radius management and stacking height. Clause 7.7 covers spaces, including the dimensions of rooms that contain distributors.

What it means in practice

  • The standard sets out the responsibilities of installers and premises owners and is written to be referenced in contracts.
  • In the UK, BS 6701 is written to support the BS EN 50174 series. Projects designed to the ISO/IEC 11801 series may call up ISO/IEC 14763-2 instead. Check which one the contract names.
  • Check the specification names the edition. Edition 2 adds remote powering and outside-building practice.
  • Check the quality plan defines the sample size, the test standard and how marginal results are treated.
