What it covers

ANSI/TIA-568.5 sets minimum requirements for balanced single twisted-pair cabling. It covers channels and permanent links, and the components used in them: cable, connectors, connecting hardware and cords. It also specifies the measurement procedures for all of its transmission parameters.

It is the component and link standard for single pair cabling in the TIA-568 series, in the same way that ANSI/TIA-568.2 serves four-pair balanced cabling. It applies to commercial buildings and similar premises with MICE1 environmental conditions. Industrial single pair cabling is outside its scope.

The target uses are intelligent building systems, IoT and machine-to-machine devices.

Channel types

The standard defines two categories of single pair cabling, named by their channel reach.

CategoryChannel reach
SP1-10001 000 m
SP1-400400 m

Both categories are specified from 0.1 MHz to 20 MHz. This range supports the IEEE 802.3cg physical layers 10BASE-T1L (long reach, point to point) and 10BASE-T1S (short reach).

Topology and installation

568.5 sets transmission performance. It does not set a cabling topology. Topology, architecture and installation requirements for single twisted-pair cabling were added to the generic standard by ANSI/TIA-568.0-E-1 (Addendum 1, July 2022), which refers to 568.5 for the cabling and components.

ANSI/TIA-568.5-1Published November 2024Corrects an incompatibility between the channel and cable PSAFEXT specifications, with other corrections. No new classes or features.

How it relates to other standards

  • IEEE 802.3cg defines the 10 Mb/s single pair Ethernet physical layers that the SP1 categories are designed to support.
  • IEEE 802.3dg defines 100BASE-T1L, which the 568.5-A revision is planned to support.
  • ANSI/TIA-568.0-E-1 gives the topology and installation rules for single pair cabling.
  • ANSI/TIA-568.2 covers four-pair balanced cabling.

What it means in practice

  • Specify the category by name, SP1-1000 or SP1-400, based on the longest channel.
  • Check that the cable datasheet states compliance with ANSI/TIA-568.5 and the category, not only a conductor size.
  • Check that field test equipment and its test limits cover 568.5 and the 0.1 MHz lower frequency limit.
  • Use 568.0-E-1 for routing, topology and installation, and 568.5 for performance and testing.
